Archers for Oda

Some new additions for the Ashigaru contingent to my swelling Samurai collection.  Most of my work has focused on building up contingents for Kato Kiyomasa's Second Division and Konishi Yukinaga's 1st Division in my Imjin War project.  I have tended to focus on the Uesegi and Takeda for my Sengoku Jidai era collection, but my unhealthy fixation with Sohei and Ikko Ikki made me realize that a huge part was missing:  Oda.

Oda Nobunaga was one of the three great "unifiers" during the Sengoku period and clashed with both the Uesegi and Takeda.  He also rather infamously crushed the Ikko Ikki and independent monks such as the Siege of Mount Hiei where his forces massacred every man, woman and child they could find in order to break their strength.

Given his pedigree I thought it appropriate to add some of his forces to the collection.  The first group is a modest group of Archers, but I have larger units of Spearmen and Arquebus lined up as well.  I am planning on sticking to a rather basic paint scheme with black armor, med blue shirts and desert yellow breaches.  The lacing is in lt blue.  The colors are aiming to be more toned down than the other four 'divisions'

For some reason I enjoy painting Ashigaru more than Samurai.  It probable is because I can focus on just a few colors, and the intent is to get a uniform group.  I am going to add some Sashimono to these figures when my Oda decals arrive.  My other goal is to add Sashimono to all of my current Ashigaru.  Not because it is necessarily accurate, but because I like the way they look on the table.  Part of the joy of the hobby.

  1. Super work, Jake! Adding Sashimono with be a worthwhile enhancement. Part of the joy is seeing beautiful troops on the table even with a little poetic license.

    1. Thanks. They should look better with White mon across their breastplates as well. I considered picking some up from Warlord, but $12.50 shipping on $18 in decal sheets shut down that idea...

  3. Looking good. I feel your pain on the shipping; perhaps there are other items you "need' to make the shipping less as a percentage of cost?

    1. I just need to find something else I want from Warlord. With their cutting loose of Test of Honour, and not offering any more of the metal figures they did that is getting harder.
