Coming up for air

Seeing Mason off to College last Summer

Has it really been 9 months already?  Reading Jon's most recent update for WSS's great wargame survey has me thinking about the online portion of my hobby again.  This blog has essentially joined the hundreds/thousands of  historical miniatures 'dead blogs' that reside here on blogger.  (A recent foray through the 141 blogs I am still subscribed to show roughly 2/3s have not updated within the last two years).  Jon's post highlighted where we report we are getting our inspiration from.  I admit part of my own blog fade is due in large part to what I see as the fragmentation of the hobby in the digital space.

I continue to chip away at my Thirty Years War project (including a trip to the Rhineland-Palatinate last April), and the search for army inspiration, paint schemes, and battle histories has exposed me to the vast array of digital sources to be searched.  Video sites like youtube have everything from documentaries to painting tutorials.  Rules designers have switched from message boards to Facebook pages and Discord channels.  X, Bluesky and Instagram seem bent on feeding short dopamine hits of images for painted figs.

Some collaborative boarding with the family over Christmas break.

Rather than go through another long winded rant, I suppose I will use this update as a means of inspiring me to get back on the bandwagon of generating content. I have missed it primarily because I am fairly bad at maintaining a painting diary otherwise, and this makes coming back to previous projects more difficult.

Spring Break 2025
With all that out of the way, let's give this blog an objective and purpose once again:

Objective:  Provide updates on the status of my wargaming hobby.
Purpose:  Maintain a record of my efforts overtime and link into the wider wargaming community.

Short term goals
  1. Status update from the last annual published goals
  2. Publish new project goals for 2025-2026
  3. Find the TYW rules that give me what I am seeking
Mid range goals
  1. Project update by period for work done since 2022.
  2. Actually finish drafting the OOBs for the 2-3 battles I would like to model from TYW

Long Term Goal: Get back in a habit of posting work to maintain interest and ensure I see individual projects through.

Interesting view from my morning workout last summer.

Let's see if I can get another post out before the end of June.  Baby steps.

Comments

  1. Nice to see you posting again. I think those goals are admirable. My own blog was started to record simple stuff - painting updates, paint schemes / techniques, games played - and it's probably at its healthiest when it concentrates on that. But of course that means when one is not painting or gaming, there is nothing to post about! Best of luck with the reset, and keep doing things in the way they suit you best.

    Cheers,
    Aaron

  2. Very good to see you back at it, Jake! Perhaps getting in a game might help with the motivation too. Cannot believe how big Mason is in the photo with you and your matching outfits.

  3. I've slowed down on blog post, myself. A combination of things are the reason - for one I've been preoccupied with getting our bathrooms renovated - basically due to rotted flooring from a leaking shower basin; another reason is the idea of downsizing for a possible move back to Hawaii - which may or may not happen, but makes me consider what I really might be able to take with me if we do move. Otherwise, still enjoy the hobby and currently focusing on Italian Wars, but may do some Napoleonic stuff again too.

  4. Welcome back ? I certainly find the amount and level of ‘information’ now available a little too much, I have pretty much ditched any forums, follow a few very selected Facebook pages. Blog for my own benefit as a record really of what I have been doing. There is still a core of active blogs and it is a nice community to be part of 🙂

  6. 9 months means Mason should be done with his first year of college! Good to have you back, Jake! Blogging does take considerable time and effort for sure. I much prefer Blogs to Facebook, et al, which seem rather ephemeral.
