Onna-bugeisha

I picked up these figures from Bad Squiddo Games last spring after hearing about them on the Meeples and Miniatures podcast. (You can see Neil's review here)   They looked like well sculpted minis and, at the time, were the only quality 28mm Female Samurai models I could find.  

Overall the sculpting is quite crisp, which allowed me to work in some vibrant colors.  I tried to stay with more pastel "spring" colors to set them apart from the rest of the collection.  The armor is nicely done and the cloth has some open areas to allow for fabric patterns to be applied by those more talented than myself.  

Wait, is she left handed?

 I picked up both the basic 3 packs.  One comes with 3 swords-women and the other with 2 naginata and a bow.  This is a nice diversity of figures, but I would have liked more Naginata-armed models as this was the traditional weapon used by a Onna-bugeisha to defend her honor and home.

I only have a few quibbles with the castings and that is the lack of scabbards for the swords-women and a quiver for the archer.  I think these were left out to maintain a single-piece casting, so it is a minor issue.

I painted the archer along the lines of Lady Yi from "Heaven and Earth."  I am hoping that either Bad Squiddo or Warlord will get around to doing some Onna-Bugeisha cavalry with naginata to do a few models from her 'honor guard'  That might be a little too obscure to count on, however.  That said, it appears that Bad Squiddo is going to do a 1-week kickstarter for new models for the Onna- Bugeisha line that may have the figures I am looking for.  (Or at least more Naginata models and apparently a Shiba-Inu in heavy armor...)
