Qin General

Work nears completion on the Watchful I Studios kickstarter set.  This time I have a converted general with standard bearer to lead the vanguard. I used a standard heavy infantry torso and added the sword arm and spare head from the General set.  The general set comes with 1 torso and three different sword arms, as well as four different heads, so it made a decent opportunity for conversion.

The standard bearer is another heavy infantry stand with a plumed helm substituted from the foot troopers.  I am trying to contain my rage at this point, as the apparent frost in the photo is my first attempt at using Armory paints mat spray.  I may have to destroy the can at this point....

For the standard, I went with the "Red Bird -Vanguard" banner from the Qin flag set.

Also reaching a frosted finish is another stand of CL cavalry. In this case I did the group as spearmen and included the additional quiver and bow holder pieces from the extras in the pack.  I don't think they the look too bad, although I was disappointed to discover they are flat pieces with no easy way to mount onto the contours of the horse figures.

This leaves me with 1 more stand of light cavalry and a handful of standard bearers to paint to accompany the other general figures. I still need to figure out some options to get enough figures to field two forces, however.  Still, it is nice to near completion on these just in time to work on all those Koreans....

  2. They are great figures but mine have prven a little too delicate for wargaming, the weapons are too thin and break easily.

    1. I have had the same problem. That's why I went with unit basing. It limits the amount of contact required with the individual castings. Most of these figures seem optimized for being cast in plastic.

  3. Very nice I like your general, varnish frosting sounds bad, good luck with it.

  4. Nice work, Jake!
Matt varnish frost is the worst! I still remember the unit of Austrian Hussars it happened to way back in 1975 - had to largely repaint them!Has happened rarely in the past. Usually this happnes in very high humidity conditions. I am told that if you spray over it with a coat of gloss varnish, the frosting will disappear. You can then try another coat with the Matt spray under DRY conditions. I like a semi-gloss finish myself.

    1. That was the odd part, it was exceptionally dry the day. I sprayed them. I was considering trying to reapply the dip varnish, but your idea will preserve all of my highlighting. I will give it a try. Thanks
