Rehabilitating the Past - Knights of the White Wolf

Do these constitute 'Oldhammer?'  is it wrong that I think of them as being too modern?  Am I the only one who still thinks of the 90's as being only 10 years ago?
Yet another re-furbished Warhammer unit.  These are probably my favorite of all of the Order knights that were released when the refurbished Empire army was rolled out back in the early 90's.  The wild hair, and massive war-hammers made them look like the Hell's Angels for their time.  How sad it was then, that the were so massively in-effective under the rules.  IIRC those big hammers (+2 strength) meant that they couldn't carry shields (3+ rather than 2+ saves) and that they would always strike last in close combat.  The end result is that they could rarely survive long enough to to justify their massive point cost.  In the end, I painted this unit and rarely used them.  Which was sad because I really like the models.

The standard was cut from the original White Dwarf magazine article (127?), so I have retained it.  I went with blue rather than 'canon' red barding as the cooler tones seemed more fitting for the cold mountainous backdrop from the background fiction.  (Middenheim is a city built atop a mountain.. or at least it was.  GW seems to do a lot of Retconning.)  I used a metallic/pearlized blue highlight for the barding that I havn't found a good match for yet.  Thus I have four more knights painted now, but the horses are as yet incomplete.

I have three more units of Order knights to complete (Reiksguard, Panther and Blazing Suns) and the lions share of this rehab project is complete.  Then its on to all those Bretonnian knights....

  1. Wild looking guys. Are these plastic and what does your son think of your newly found treasures of old?

    1. Only the horses are plastic. And, as noted below, they are not currently minecraft, so are of dubious value to his 7yo mind.

  2. They do look great and a real shame you don't get to use them due to the rules

    1. I understand they changed the rules to a +1 strength, and can strike first in 5th edition, but that was after I had moved on to historical gaming.

  4. They don't seem to be having any trouble holding those hammers in one hand...
Which leaves one hand/arm free for a shield.

You should play a better game...

    1. Yes, I do. I havn't actually played Warhammer Fantasy Battle since 1997. Thus the 'Rehabilitating the Past' moniker
