Order of Calatrava

For the most part I have been guilty of just painting Normans and seconding them as Spanish Knights.  To correct this I decided to go with a very distinctively Spanish unit for my first Knightly Order unit: The Order of Calatrava.  These are from Fireforge Games Templar Knights plastic set.  You basically get 6 Caparisoned Warhorses, 9 normal warhorses and cloaks for everybody!  I tried to free-hand the orders symbol to mixed success.  Having completed them, I would be tempted to just order the transfers I found on Battleflag's website.

I also picked up the sergeants box and did a related unit of "Cavalls alforrats" as Medium Cavalry (Cm).  I really like how the flowing cloaks make the figures more dynamic.  The pieces really highlight some of the advantages to plastic sets.  There are plenty of extra weapons and shields and you can really play with the poses.  That said, the saddles are molded onto both halves of the horses, and are a real pain to line up when you glue them together.

So where are the other 15 Knights?  They're coming...

  1. I really like your knights and your free handed shields! In Impetus, knights are tops. If you can get them into melee unscratched, look out!

    1. It's the unscratched part I will need to focus on. I needed something to counter Jon's Black Guard

    2. Unfortunately, there is no black guard cavalry.

    1. Thanks, although I think I need to make a larger unit to get the feeling of mass these guys need right. I think that is what draws me to 6mm. I have a much easier time achieving the look of mass.

    2. I don't know about mass. Your five knights on a single stand look really good especially with the flowing poses. They appear to be bearing down to skewer a few hapless souls.

Maybe try six figures on one stand and see if that helps.

  4. I wouldn't want to see these guys charging me... or my troops!
