Confederate Cavalry

I continue to add to the CSA forces in this project with some GHQ confederate cavalry(standing).  In this case, they differ from their Union counterparts in that they have Slouch hats instead of forage cap.

I went with a uniform approach to the riders as I already have a varied color pattern with the horses. I didn't want the unit to end up looking like an ad-hoc mixture of minis.  This also gave me a chance to do a color test with using AP Skeleton Bone for the lighter uniform texture.  As with the Union cavalry models these come with a separate Guidon tab to be glued in place, and I need to find something a little more robust for long term use.

I also finished painting the non-firing minis from the Union Skirmisher packs I didn't use for the regular units.  These guys are sculpted as advancing with weapons outstretched, and didn't fit well with the other, more uniform, sculpts.  I opted to base them here on poker chips to use as possible disorder markers or something similar.  Perhaps if I find a rule set that needs separate skirmishers they can fill in the existing units...

Tomorrow is the last day for GHQ's annual 15% sale.  I took advantage of the sale to order a few more packs of cavalry to complete a brigade for each side as well as do some stands of mounted horse holders to finish off the dismounted cavalry units as well.  If you want to take advantage of the sale you need to order at least $50 worth of stuff and enter the code FREEDOM at checkout.

  1. I like the Cavalry and I agree fully with your choices in modeling them. Add some Confederate infantry and you're ready for a game!

The Union infantry could be used for a number of different kinds of markers.

    1. The CSA infantry will be the last to finish I think. I am painting them in batches: Grey Base; Butternut Base' Skeleton Bone base. I will then mix and match them to get the right feel. It will take a lot longer, but I think I will end up with 6-8 good looking units when I am done.

  3. Those Union skirmishers are rather bizarre sculpt, aren't they?

    1. Yes, most all of GHQ sculpts are very nicely executed. Odd that this would be the rare miss.

  4. Great work on all of these. Could the arms of the skirmishers be gently/carefully bent to more realistic position? Like closer down to their sides?

    1. Good idea, I hadn't thought of that. I will give it a whirl with the CSA models as they are still unpainted/unprimered. (Don't want to chip the existing paint scheme if I can avoid it.)
