Mercenary Pike

The first of two large Mercenary Stands.  I opted to do a few stands in the wide variety of colors you might expect from the Landsknecht.  I have really enjoyed painting these, as I have been able to use a much wider array of colors than usual.  For the standards I went with a selection of Swiss types featuring bears...because my son likes bears and thought they would look good.

I am near the end of my collection of Foundry Landsknecht, and thus these groups have a mix of pike positions on the main stand.  I tried to make it look more natural by putting the banners on the upright pikes.  Tomorrow I will post the last one, and then its on to the last of the supporting troops.  Fortunately my mounted Crossbow and Arquebus have arrived, so all of the pieces are in place.

  1. Great looking pike stand! Is this one or two stands? It appears to be two but seem like different sized bases. Might be my eyes...

I have some Landsknechts now, too and would enjoy starting on them once I return.

    Are you on Spring Break?

    1. I am not yet on Spring break, that's next week. My son's school had spring break last week, so he and my Wife went on an adventure across Western Washington leaving me alone with nothing to do after work but paint.

The bottom picture is two stands. I am doing all six Pike units with one 12cm square and one 12x6cm base. The idea is to reflect the deep 3 stand formations in Impetus, but reduce the number of bases. When the first unit is eliminated, I remove the back stand. When the second stand goes, I swap the small one back in for the large one.

    2. Ah, time alone to paint without interruptions. That sounds relaxing.

  2. More great stuff, jake!

All these slashed clothes are reminding me that although I have painted literally hundreds of Landsknechts, it has probably been 5 years since the last one. I think I am experiencing Plunderhosen withdrawal! :-)

    1. That's ok, I am currently OD-ing in them. The big change for me has been a return to black primer with dry-brushed colors. I tried a white primer, but the white spots were driving me mad!

  3. Awesome!
Only issue will be how to transport them?

    1. Currently only from the display cabinets to the table. I have not thought much beyond that. For travel, I have my beloved 6mm figs!
